History

The highest individual award presented by the Ottawa Swans each season is the Ottawa Swans Best and Fairest player.  The award is presented to the player deemed to have the best and fairest season of all the Ottawa Swans.  Since 2008, the recipient of the award has received the Spurrell Medal.  The winner also has their name inscribed on the Best and Fairest Trophy.

The award was named in honour of the highly respected Ottawa Swans founder and first ever captain Steve Spurrell.  It was because of Steve’s dedication to the sport, the club, his teammates and the way he played the game himself, that Ottawa Swans became a reality.  Naming the best and fairest award after him was an obvious and easy decision.

How it Works

Voting for the Spurrell Medal is conducted by anonymous spectators of each game.  Immediately after each home-and-away match, each nominated anonymous spectator issues their votes as follows:

Three votes awarded for the player they believed to have been the best on the ground, two votes for the second best player and one vote for the third best player.

Those votes are kept under lock and key and the results of them are only made public at the presentation night when the votes are counted and the Spurrell Medal is presented.
