After ten rounds of consistent improvement yet, disappointing results, the Ottawa Swans had hoped to finally break through into the win column for the 2010 OAFL season. Unfortunately, round eleven would not be kind to the Swannies who faced off against a well-conditioned and experienced Toronto Eagles side. With the two teams at polar opposites of the OAFL ladder, the lads from Ottawa and their faithful knew they would be in for an arduous match.
From the opening bounce, the Eagles won the battle for the ball out of the centre and were able to progress play deep into their forward line, where the Eagles kicked truly and converted their opportunities all day long. If ever there was a metaphor to depict the Swans on this day, it came in the opening minutes when centre-half forward David Martin courageously challenged for a loose ball, only to come away from the contest with a nose split wide-open and requiring medical attention. In the end, all of the Swans would be left bruised and battered on this day.
With continual pressure placed on the Swan’s backline throughout the first half, veterans Darren Roffey, Nic Desson and Sean Robertson-Tait were inserted into defensive roles and were able to quell the onslaught in the second half. However, with such a lead built, the Eagles were able to coast through the second half and ran out easy winners on the day.
Rookies, Jon Lajeunesse and Joey Beaudin played resilient games, respectfully defending on the halfback line and taking strong marks on the wing, proving to be bright spots on what was a rather gloomy day for the Swans.
Assistant Coach Yaser Abou Elenein knew that it would be a tough ask of the Swannies this week against such a quality side; playing undermanned and without a few veterans players. “It was a tough loss to take on the chin, but we never look to make excuses. Our guys are always willing and look forward to lacing up their boots each and every week. I’m confident we’ll bounce back and put in a strong effort this coming week.”
The Swans hope that the confines of the Rideau Carleton Raceway will yield a better result next week as they take on the Etobicoke Kangaroos on Saturday, August 14th at 2pm.
Final score: Toronto Eagles 30.22 (total: 202) defeated Ottawa Swans 0.0 (total: 0)
Best players: Roffey, Peck, Goldhawk, Lajeunesse
