Hawks Best By Far Print E-mail

It was always going to be a tough day against one of the premier teams in the competition - the Broadview Hawks.  In what was a sign of things to come the coach copped a speeding fine by the Richmond Hill police so arrived at the ground not too pleased.

The first quarter had a certainly familiar ring to it as the Swans won the ruck tap and started the get the ball out of the middle.  Some tough tackling, dubious umpiring decisions and inability to lock the ball in the forward zone cost the Swans dearly. The hawks provided plenty of rebound from half back and moved the ball long and direct to their main focus Danny Walker.  The Swans had some early chances with Yasman, Razor and Jake getting some early touches of the footy and moving the ball int the forward zone well.  However the swans failed to kick the ball out in front of their forwards which made the job for Nic, Roffey and Pommy a difficult one.  The hawks piled on the goals via route 1 and the quarter could not end soon enough.

The second quarter allowed the Swans some leeway as we kicked with a strong breeze which meant Roffey, pommy and hammer were able to keep out in front of their opponents.  With Razor wining nearly every ruck tap the swans were able to draw even in the midfield however the constant tackling and pressure began to take its toll.  Too many turnovers meant the ball was quickly whipped back into the Hawks forward zone which resulted in a plethora of goals.

The 3rd quarter started promisingly with the Swans attacking the ball with renewed vigour.  With the most new starters of any club in the OAFL competition it was pleasing to see so many (Canadian) players out on the field having a go.  It was also great to see lads supporting each other by increasing the chat and level of support when the ball was in dispute.  The Swans defence was outstanding all day especially given the rate at which the ball was pumped into the Hawks forward zone.

The 4th quarter was a non event with a thunder shower interrupting play. Despite the stoppage I was proud to see every Swans player eager to get back out on the field despite the lightning and thunder ringing directly above the ground. The umpires called a halt to play and the Swans slowly trudged off the field beaten but proud at their unwillingness to give up.

Best players on the day:

Yasman - ran all day and really started to read the play well
Razor - if he is not nominated for the position of Northwind ruckman fo season 2009 then  I will walk to Montreal
Simon - outstanding in defence and showed lots of run at every opportunity.
