This round 6 saw the Ottawa Swans take on the Toronto Eagles the reigning premiers from season 2007. Undeterred and with a relatively inexperienced line up the Swans started the game with a bang.
Abley led by Razor in the ruck the Swans were able to win clean possession from the middle and transfer play quickly into the forward line. Millsy and Brody worked hard to run off their opponents at every opportunity and quickly racked up telling posessions. A revamped forward line with Rowdy and full forward and the every reliable Darren Roffey at Ctr Half Forward took some great marks and managed to get on the score board early. By quarter time the swans were only 3 goals down and the Eagles knew they had a game on their hands. The second quarter saw the Eagles accelerate away from the swans with some silky passages of play leaving the Swans defence unable to repel the quick and repeated delivery of the football into the Eagles forward zone. Whilst the Swans won their fair share of ball in the middle at times players were second to the ball and the Eagles were able to repel the ball out of their defensive zone. The Swans need to learn that one quarter of footy does not win a game however the signs are there and improvement is noticeable every game. The second half saw an improvement in the swans play with some aggressive running at the ball by Millsy, Brody, Yaser and Rookie paving the way for quick transition down to the swans forward zone. Scoring chances were a plenty and miss of the year has to go to Jason Jones who missed a sitter from only a few metres out. That said it was some good work from Matt, Roffey and co in the forward line that generated these chances and more will come if we stick to our game plan of attacking and winning the ball at all costs. Towards the end of the 3rd quarter Ricca went off with what he claims was a fractured nose although the captain (assistant coaching on the day) Steve Spurrell told him to harden up and get back out on the field. The last quarter started as we finished it. Clean possession from the middle by Razor - who beat his man ALL day - meant the ball was routinely pumped long into the swans forward zone. Roffey took some telling marks and Yaser won some key ground contests against much bigger opponents. However the game finished with the swans 10+ goal losers but some great signs of improvement especially by the new players/signees. Best players on the day were: Razor - mountain of ruck work and cannot think of one ruck tap he lost Yaser - quick and clean possession. Hard running Millsy - ran hard at the ball and some nice long kicks to the forwards helped create quality scoring chances Roffey - led hard and gave his man grief......though he should have kicked more goals! |
