The Ottawa Swans played the Toronto Rebels in what we expected to be a close fought game. It was not to be as the first quarter saw the Rebels come out firing on the pitch, making the most of kicking with the wind to post 4 majors in the quarter.
Goals were scarce in the 2nd qtr as the Swans won their fare share of the ball but could not translate that possession into a reasonable return on the scoreboard. The Swans were 7 goals down and looking for some inspiration.
Best on ground - Ryan Gregory in the Ruck Able led by Luke and Legend in the middle plus some crucial taps by Ryan the Swans were able to stymie the Rebels moves into the forward zone. Special mention must go to Alp and rookie who went down to the back line to take one two of the Rebels more dominant forwards. Well done lads on taking on the challenge on playing these two players man on man and winning your fair share of the pill. Some stirring words at 3 qtr time from Legend put the wind up the boys and the Swans came out firing kicking a couple of goals to cut the lead. The forward line finally worked out that they must lead early and often and the result was a great return albeit too late to change the result of the game. Special note, the Swans definitely need some goal kicking and kicking in (after a point) practise after posting a final score of 2.2.14 to 16.11.105 Some of the highlights of the day: Some great play by Razor in the ruck who was a tireless worker all day against a strong Rebels ruck man, he has really impressed the coaching stuff with his commitment to the team getting in to win crucial ruck taps and laying some great tackles around the ground. The old men of the team, Legend and Luke, seemed to be everywhere throughout the game racking up the possessions keeping the stat man busy, the new kid on the block Keith showed some impressive form for his first AFL game especially in defence. |
